DR. MATT MUIJEN, PROGRAMME MANAGER FOR MENTAL HEALTH, WHO REGIONAL OFFICE FOR EUROPE, A MEMBER OF THE CONGRESS INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE, DELIVERS A KEYNOTE REPORT AT THE CONGRESS

Dr. Matt Muijen, Programme Manager for Mental Health at the WHO Regional Office for Europe since May 2004, has joined the International Organizing Committee and delivers a keynote report at the Congress on Mental Health:Meeting the Needs of the XXI Century.
 
 
At present time Dr. Matt Muijen is responsible for planning and coordinating mental health policies and strategies, research, dissemination and implementation in the Region, and is working actively with many countries and organizations.At present time Dr. Matt Muijen is responsible for planning and coordinating mental health policies and strategies, research, dissemination and implementation in the Region, and is working actively with many countries and organizations.
One of the priorities is the implementation the WHO European Mental Health Action Plan for Europe that was endorsed by the 53 European Member States at the Regional Committee in September in Izmir in 2013. The scope of this is public mental wellbeing and prevention of mental health problems, rights for people with mental disorders and the establishment of effective, safe and respectful mental health services.
The WHO Regional Office for Europe has also started a project to address the needs of adults with intellectual and mental disabilities living in institutions. This follows the Bucharest Declaration: ‘Better health, better lives: children and young people with intellectual disabilities and their families` adopted by European Countries in 2010. Central to this Declaration are: the safety of these children, support to live with their family, and preventing admission to large institutions.
Until April 2004 he was Chief Executive of the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health in London for 12 years, a policy and research institute closely involved with mental health care reforms in the UK.
His background is a community psychiatrist and epidemiologist, and he trained in Cambridge and the Institute of Psychiatry in London. He is Dutch, and studied Medicine in Amsterdam.
