The following statement was co-written by Dr. Judy Kuriansky, a member of the International Organizing Committee for the II Congress on Mental Health: Meeting the Needs of the XXI Century in Moscow, who is an esteemed international psychologist and a professor at Columbia University Teachers College, in her role as the main representative to the United Nations of the International Association of Applied Psychology and the World Council for Psychotherapy. This statement was submitted to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) during the UN Commission for Social Development (CSD) this past February 2018, and accepted for formal publication. The title of the statement is “Reducing Poverty by Employment of Persons with Disabilities: Contributions of Psychological Research and Practice” to be consistent with the theme of the CSD meeting that was “Follow-up to the World Summit for Social Development and the twenty-fourth special session of the General Assembly priority theme: strategies for the eradication of poverty to achieve sustainable development for all.” The statement was also distributed at an event moderated by Dr. Kuriansky at the UN.
