MENTAL HEALTH AND EDUCATION: PERSONAL EXPERT OPINION BY PROFESSOR RICARDO CUINEA

Ricardo Guinea.MD., President, World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation, Hospital de Día Madrid (Spain)

“Psychosocial Rehabilitation appears in the last decades a new approach to attention to the severe mentally ill, different from classic institutional or medical approach in the XX Century. This approach implies an interdisciplinary, community based approach. This means an its best version, synergic actions from different services and departments within the welfare and the mental health departments, and intervention of different professionals (psychiatrists, psychologist, nurses, social workers, social educators, trainers for work, and other bodies of the community).

In this approach, professional training becomes a complex topic, where in addition to specific training for each professional profile, a common culture and a set of common values need to be disseminated and consensual to the many participants in this task.

My presentation will explore this approach in a pragmatic way, based in experience from different countries.”
