MENTAL HEALTH AND EDUCATION: PERSONAL EXPERT OPINION BY Hana Matejovska Kubesova

MENTAL HEALTH AND EDUCATION: PERSONAL EXPERT OPINION BY Hana Matejovska Kubesova, MD, PhD, professor of internal medicine – geriatrics at the Masaryk University, Medical Faculty, Brno, Czech Republic, the Past President of Czech Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics (2011-2015), Head of Department of Internal Medicine, Geriatrics and General Practice, Teachimng Hospital Brno.
“There are at least two points of view at that topic. Firstly – as we can hear frequently, dementia appears more often in people with higher education. My experience is, things are not as they seem to be. The cognitive impairment is rather more visible in people with previous university education working at high positions. These people are usually earlier and more thoroughly assessed.
Secondly – the mental activity helps to save the cognitive functions, so there is recommendation to keep the mental activity as long as possible. Learning of languages, long life education or simply meeting friends and discussions with them. That all are suitable kinds of mental activity. Otherwise the brain and mental functions will have the same fate as the muscles of a bodybuilder who has stopped the regular exercise. Anything in human organism that is not being used, becomes atrophic and loses its function”.
