Work is good for mental health, but a negative working environment can lead to physical and mental health problems,” Secretary General of the World Psychiatric Association Roy Abraham Kallivayalil has said.
Dr. Kallivayalil was delivering the presidential address at the World Mental Health Month observance jointly organised by Pushpagiri Medical College, World Association of Social Psychiatry, and the Indian Medical Association at the college on Thursday.
He said experience at the workplace was a determining factor in the well-being of people.
Dr. Kallivayalil said 10% of the people suffered from common mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. Unhealthy work environment would worsen this and lead to absenteeism, lost productivity, and substance abuse.
It is high time every institution developed a healthy work culture, laying emphasis on stress management,” he said.

Mental health in the workplace was chosen the theme of World Mental Health Day 2017. A negative working environment may lead to physical and mental health problems, harmful use of substances or alcohol, absenteeism and lost productivity. Workplaces that promote mental health and support people with mental disorders are more likely to reduce absenteeism, increase productivity and benefit from associated economic gains (WHO http://www.portal.pmnch.org/mental_health/in_the_workplace/en/).
